Montana Heritage Center Field Trip 2026

Tuesday, July 21st
Meet at 11:30 inside of the MT Heritage Center

o   Address: 225 N Roberts Street

o   Situated directly across from the Montana State Capitol building.

o   Free parking lot north of Center and streets around Capitol.

 12:00 lunch provided by the YHS with a speaker from Montana Heritage Center.

Post Lunch – a guided tour of the Homeland, CM Russell, and Poindexter exhibit galleries. After the tour, you can take a more in-depth view of each gallery. The Center is open from 9am to 5pm.

 Dinner is on your own.  

 Wednesday, July 22nd

10am tour of Fort Harrison

o   Active military base established in 1892, the Montana Military Museum, and Montana State Veteran Cemetery (free admission, ID required).

o   1956 MT Major St is the main location entrance. 5.5 miles from the State Capital.    

All meals on your own.

This is a relaxing historical trip with options for you to stay and play at your own pace. Helena is not limited - many art galleries, eateries, a peddling bar trolleys, and a carousel. 

Montana State Capital Tour (free) 9am to 5pm. 1301 East 6th Ave. Meet at 1st floor information desk 

Original Governor’s Mansion (free). Only available if renovations are complete.

 Reeder’s Alley – a .25-mile walking tour that offers a great way to get an overview of Helena’s early mining history.

 Last Chance Train Ride – a cute open-air train on wheels. A one hour narrated tour that departs from and returns to the Montana Heritage Center at 6th and Roberts Street. See the opulent mansion district, marvel at the Cathedral of St. Helena, and roll by our governor’s homes. Cruise by a restored miners’ village, enjoy the unique architecture along Last Chance Gulch, and catch a glimpse of the Old Fire Tower.

Purchase tickets 1/2 hour before departure. Departure times: 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 5:30pm.
